Reflection Essay – Presentations for Disability Awareness

On Tuesday, June 22nd, the class presented its second presentation. The presentations consisted of dealing with Disabilities in our society, the way people with disabilities function in the collegiate environment, and how to raise awareness for these unique individuals. For Group One and I, we had the liberty to present on the topic of Vision and Auditory impairments. I had the opportunity to discuss the implementations of smartphone applications into higher education with my counterpart Adriana Haber.

Vision and Auditory Impairments was the topic of our group presentation. In this presentation, the group was able to analyze the topic by going into detail about the history, implementation, presence, and social interactions that take place between students with these disabilities both within and outside the learning environments. The presentation consisted of the analysis of the interpersonal relationships, topic selection and development, organizing of speech, presentational aids, language style, history, usage of applications, associations, and where the disabilities of Vision and Auditorily impairment are recognized as a part of Disability Month in October.

The Second Group had the presentation dealing with mobility, psychological, and spinal disabilities. The group made strong emphasis on how each disability affects the disables, and how interpersonal communication and socializing help vocalize these individuals struggles in and out of the learning environment. The groups’ interviews with students with the disabilities clarified the doubts on their disabilities and helped practice how to vocalize their issues in an organized manner.

The last group presented the topic of cognitive, head, and invisible disabilities.  The group illustrated the vast contrast and range disabilities can manifest themselves into and was very informative as much as the other groups that had presented and helmed well by Anthony. They also had a great interview and video section on presenting their disabilities.

To conclude, I believe my group and the rest of the class presented ourselves with high vernacular, rhetoric, and technique when it came to present the topics assigned to us. I felt this exercise allowed us to become insightful as to what students and faculty with disabilities can face in a professional learning environment. It also felt enlightening as to see what my fellow faculty and student body members face on an intrapersonal level and how they are able to compose themselves and deal with their disabilities in a learning environment like the one’s found throughout Miami Dade College. These individuals are unique and diversified and have my upmost respect as to how they manage themselves both personally, and academically and I thank them for being so willing to help us understand the struggles and accomplishments they face on a daily basis.
