Reflection essay on Disabilities
On this group project, the class
was given disabilities in order for us to research and form a presentation on
the given disability. This in my opinion was an excellent subject to be given
to us as a speech class. Disabilities is something that is highly occurring in
our population and there is more to it than what most people think. There are
many types of disabilities, ranging from: Visual, hearing, intellectual,
physical, mental, autism spectrum as well as some from an acquired brain
injury. Being aware of what these disabilities mean and how they affect the
people that have them is a great step in the right direction to bringing our
society closer.
Growing up, I have had many
occasions to deal with people with disabilities. My two best friends both have
younger brothers with autism and seeing them grow up has informed me on how
their lifestyle in unique. The child with autism is called Gustavo and he is so
smart and talented. Although he has autism and has difficulties learning as
everyone does, he is very skilled at a lot of things and has his own way of
learning and grasping topics. The most important part of learning to interact
with someone with a disability is by learning about their disability and
keeping an open mind as to how they can approach them with certain things.
This project is a great way to
teaching us students on how to interact with humans with these certain
disabilities. As in the past projects, group 1 the group I was included in were
just great. The communication we had was exceptional and the leaders did a
great job organizing the structure of the project. We all had individual parts
assigned to us that dealt with our given disability which was hearing and
visual impairment. My task was to interview someone with the given disabilities.
I had to search through many sources to find someone to interview and I went
through many contacts to do so. Eventually I ended up finding the people
without even looking for them. I was working at my everyday job at the UPS
store however I was working at a different store located in Kendall where I did
not really know the customers, at least not the regulars. To my surprise I met
two mailbox holders that day, one by the name of craig and the other by the
name of Joshua. Both were amazing human beings who were very open and genuine
with their answers. I felt as if getting to know them I had known them my whole
life. Overall, I had a blast interviewing them and it was a great eye-opening
experience.
In conclusion, this project was a
great way of raising awareness and giving us the students insiders on the types
of disabilities there are and how they affect the individuals. This class has
been full of surprises and I have very much enjoyed the assignments Ms. Sherri
has given to us, I can honestly say this was a great experience and is one that
will stick with me forever.
